insomnia/restlessness/faithless

I’ve had quite a few restless nights lately, where I have extreme difficulty falling asleep.  I’ve been able to rule out the presence or lack of the following before-bed and in-bed circumstances:

  • caffeine
  • sugar
  • alcohol
  • heavy food
  • ambient temperature
  • humidity
  • clothing
  • mattress type (sofa, air mattress, lumpy or firm or soft mattress)
  • pillows
  • ambient noise, white noise, silence
  • light
  • sex
  • blankets
  • presence of others in bed
  • presence of others in room
  • stress (usually near nil)
  • anxiety (usually near nil)
  • masturbation
  • quantity of sleep from the previous night
  • counting sheep or visualising color

On nights I’m restless, I find myself very incapable of staying comfortable in a single position for more than a few minutes.

I’ve been recommended the use of ear plugs, but I prefer to decline.  I am uncomfortabe muffling my hearing (or sight).  I’m really looking to hear suggestions on things that have specifically worked for you.  Even if you’ve made them to me before, I’d like to see a consolidated list in comments.

There are no holes in my mattress of which I plead guilty to.
